Welcome to the FASD Primary Educator EDI Toolkit. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition affecting brain structure, executive function, sensory processing, and emotional regulation. In primary learning environments (Kindergarten through Grade 3), early equity-focused interventions grounded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and trauma-informed pedagogy make a profound difference.

This toolkit provides primary educators with  high-quality, and accessible resources—spanning foundational guides, classroom videos, podcast episodes, and downloadable practical strategy handbooks. Designed to reduce barriers, foster neurodiversity-affirming practices, and nurture a sense of belonging, this go-to toolkit equips educators to meet the unique learning needs of young students with FASD.

 

Why FASD Belongs in an EDI Toolkit?

Equity means giving each learner the supports they need to participate and succeed—not expecting every child to learn, remember, communicate or self-regulate in the same way. Students with FASD may experience differences in memory, executive functioning, sensory processing, communication, attention, emotional regulation and adaptive skills. These differences are often misunderstood as defiance or lack of effort.

General Information about FASD

CanFASD

The Canada Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Research Network (CanFASD) is Canada’s first and only national, collaborative research network dedicated to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

CanFASD connects researchers, clinicians, educators, policymakers, and families across the country to produce high-quality, evidence-based research. Its mission focuses on three critical areas: prevention, diagnosis, and lifespan intervention. Rather than providing direct clinical services, CanFASD translates complex scientific research into practical resources, online training courses, and policy guidelines. For educators and professionals, it serves as the primary national hub for evidence-based strategies, helping schools and communities build inclusive, FASD-informed environments.

FASDONE

The FASD Ontario Network of Expertise (FASD ONE) is a province-wide volunteer collaboration of specialists, educators, diagnostic clinicians, justice professionals, and caregivers dedicated to improving outcomes for individuals living with FASD.

The FASD ONE website serves as a comprehensive resource hub structured around key focus areas: Education, Prevention, Intervention & Support, Diagnostic Services, and Justice. For primary educators, the platform provides evidence-informed guidelines, accommodation frameworks, and connections to regional support networks, helping school teams, service providers, and families collaborate effectively to build inclusive environments.

What can Alcohol do to a Fetus?

This third film provides an in-depth look at the biological impacts of prenatal alcohol exposure on a developing fetus. It illustrates how alcohol crosses the placenta to reach the fetus, altering gene expression and disrupting critical cell migration during early development. Additionally, the film highlights how alcohol impairs overall brain development and inhibits physical fetal growth, offering educators a clear visual understanding of the complex physiological changes behind FASD.

FASD Elephant Hub

Created by licensed psychologist Michael Harris, this platform focuses on neurobehavioral conditions and nervous-system-first models. It provides educators and caregivers with insights on reframing behaviors and creating sustainable, brain-based supports.
